Library

The filter library

Twenty-four looks, shelved by what they are for rather than how they were built. A look can sit on several shelves; a warm negative is both a portrait look and a food look.

Each swatch pair is a reference colour above and the same colour through the look below, worked out from the look’s recipe when this page was built. “Open it on your photo” starts the workspace with that look as the base of a new recipe.

Film

Negative and slide behaviour
  • Everyday Negative

    Film pack

A restrained colour negative: a slight toe in the shadows, warm highlights, nothing exaggerated.

Skin: Leaves skin almost where it started, half a step warmer.

warmed · S-curve · more saturation · per-channel curves · colour pushed into tonal bands · lifted blacks

  • Warm Portrait

    Film pack

Built around faces: warmth in the midtones, highlights rolled off early so bright cheeks keep their shape.

Skin: Pushes skin toward peach and holds the brightest parts back from white.

warmed · magenta tint · S-curve · more saturation · per-channel curves · colour pushed into tonal bands · lifted blacks

  • Cool Negative

    Film pack

Cyan in the shadows, restrained yellows, the grey of an overcast afternoon.

Skin: Cools skin noticeably — flattering on a pale subject, sallow on a warm one.

cooled · S-curve · less saturation · per-channel curves · colour pushed into tonal bands · lifted blacks

  • Slide Fifty

    Film pack

Slide behaviour: deep blacks, saturated colour, and highlights that clip rather than roll.

Skin: Unforgiving on skin — every warm patch gets warmer. Best on landscape and architecture.

S-curve · more saturation · per-channel curves · colour pushed into tonal bands

  • Kiosk Gold

    Film pack

The warm, slightly heavy-handed colour of film developed over a shop counter.

Skin: Strong golden cast on skin, which is either the whole point or entirely wrong.

warmed · S-curve · more saturation · per-channel curves · colour pushed into tonal bands · lifted blacks

  • Blue Hour

    Film pack

Cold highlights over a warm floor — the split you get twenty minutes after the sun has gone.

Skin: Drains warmth from skin. Works on a figure in a landscape, less so on a portrait.

    cooled · S-curve · less saturation · split toning · lifted blacks

    Open it on your photo
  • Green Field

    Film pack

A touch of green through the midtones and cool shadows; foliage separates instead of going to mush.

Skin: Pulls a little colour out of skin. Fine in a wide shot, thin in a close one.

green tint · S-curve · more saturation · per-channel curves · colour pushed into tonal bands · lifted blacks

  • Neutral Pro

    Film pack

The quietest look here. A gentle curve, honest colour, and nothing pushed anywhere.

Skin: Closest to leaving skin alone. Use it when a look would be a distraction.

Recipes you build yourself

In the workspace any look becomes the first layer of a recipe: a strength, then tone (exposure, contrast, midtones, fade), colour (temperature, tint, saturation) and a finish of grain and vignette. A recipe can be saved to this browser, starred, put in a named collection, compared against three others on the light table, run across a batch of photographs, or exported as a small JSON file.

That file holds a format name, a version number, the library version, the base look’s name and a handful of numbers — nothing that runs, and no picture. On import every number is checked against its range and anything out of bounds is refused with the reason, rather than clamped into something you did not ask for. Recipes written by the first version of the format are upgraded on the way in, rescaled so they draw the same picture.
